Svefneyjar
345 Flatey (Breiðafirði)
The historic Svefneyjar, or Sleepy Islands, are a group of privately owned islands in Breiðafjörður off the west coast of Iceland. They are located near Flatey Island (named the best island in the world by Big 7 Travel in 2020), and it takes approximately 10-15 minutes to travel between Flatey and Svefneyjar by a small boat. On the main island of Svefneyjar, there are two single-family houses, one of which is available for rent in its entirety. The rental home was originally built in the 1970s but has been recently renovated. The house has four bedrooms: one master bedroom with a California king-size bed, one room with a single bed, a room with a sofa bed that converts into a queen-size bed, and one bedroom that is used as an office. The kitchen, dining area, and a double living room are open-plan. The house includes one bathroom. In front of the house, there is a deck with a table and chairs, perfect for outdoor dining and grilling. A hot tub is also available on the deck. The artwork in the house is by the American artist Rachel Brown and features Icelandic animals. Neighbour island, Flatey, has a cell phone tower and WIFI in the house is provided through a Starlink connection. The main island is powered through solar panels. An electric Moke and electric golf cart are used to transport luggage and supplies within the island. The rental price includes boat transfers between Flatey and Svefneyjar upon arrival and departure. The ferry Baldur operates regular trips from Stykkishólmur and Brjánslækur to Flatey. The landlord can arrange grocery purchases for the tenant during the rental period. A security deposit will be required for rentals longer than one month. In addition to the main island, Svefneyjar consists of 62 other islands and skerries. At low tide, many of the islands can be reached on foot, and it is also enjoyable to sail between them at high tide. Svefneyjar is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. There is abundant birdlife, and during the summer months, thousands of puffins can be seen on the islands. Visitors can enjoy endless hiking trails, both on the main island and the surrounding islets. Boats and kayaks are available on the main island for exploring the surrounding waters. There are also excellent conditions for sea swimming. Svefneyjar was the birthplace and home of Eggert Ólafsson, a famous Icelandic poet, writer, and naturalist. One of his most famous works is the Travel Book of Eggert Ólafsson and Bjarni Pálsson. Svefneyjar is also home to Ranakofinn, believed to be the oldest house in Iceland. Svefneyjar are inhabited by a few sheep that roam between the islands wild. They originally escaped from nearby islands. These sheep swim between the islands and survive the winter by feeding on seaweed, as Svefneyjar is one of Iceland’s richest seaweed habitats.
